A Ship to Remember: the Saga of The Hornet – Alexander R. Griffin

This is a 1943 book about the short wartime career of the first aircraft carrier Hornet. As you might expect, it is melodramatic, hagiographic, and frequently factually wrong, but that's to be expected from a book put out during wartime. It is actually a pretty entertaining read, and if there is no comment whatsoever about the Hornet air group's complete failure to attack an enemy carrier on June 4 at the Battle of Midway - other than Torpedo 8 of course – there is at least an entertaining fictional account of it striking a battleship and carrier in the late afternoon.  The trauma of watching another carrier burn and sink (the Wasp on September 18, 1942) was detailed, foreshadowing what would happen to the Hornet a month later.
