Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue: The Untold History of English - John McWhorter

I just finished this as an audiobook and found it really interesting.  Lots of information about the odd characteristics of English and where they may have come from, including Celtic and Phoenician (seriously).  The author seems to relish attacking the conventional wisdom on some points, and made it really entertaining to listen to (the author was the narrator).
