Well, obviously I need to spend a little time cleaning up the shop, but after a couple of pints of teak oil, the old deck chair from the S.S. New Amsetrdam is looking a lot better. When I started it was light gray - as weathered as teak can get. It was a darker brown like this when I got it 16-17 years ago - it's taken that long for the polyurethane someone slapped on it to wear off so I could sand it smooth and re-oil it.
I always assumed this came from the 1950's era liner (built in 1937), but given that two types are circulating on the Internet (at least they have different plates with the ship's name and "first clas only") I'm not sure if it is the predecessor, the 1905-1932 ship.
The plates on it do not look like these,
although they say the same thing.
Instead, they are black enamel with brass lettering and outlines.
