Since the boys all need practice reading "chapter books" I have switched over bedtime reading from kids' books to more chapter books. I read an abridged The Adventures of Tom Sawyer last year and they absolutely loved Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass, using the 1960 Gardner annotated.
We've also worked our way through The Hobbit, using the slipcased hardback Mother got me in 1979, and then went to one of my all-time favorite book, William Pene DuBois' The Twenty-One Balloons. That was followed by a kids' version of Simon Winchester's Krakatoa (Collin in particular loves natural disasters).
We also read what was for a long time my absolute favorite book, Alan Dean Foster's Star Trek Log One, which I first read in 1974 (and reread and posted on four years ago), and they really liked that, although their interest has flagged a bit on the second one.
Most recently, Grayson lobbied for Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow by James Rollins , which he recently read and enjoyed, so I downloaded that to the iPad and we have been reading that lately. It may have sparked something because in the past week all three have gotten absolutely addicted to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books - almost as bad as they have had the Nintendo DS obsession.
One book that hasn't taken off is Carol Hoff's Johnny Texas, which I read when I was little. Just isn't getting their interest for some reason. Another of my favorites was Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine, which I read them a couple of years back, and they tolerated it, but they didn't like it.
