It's actually been two years since we sent out Christmas cards, so we included a link to this post in our Christmas card to update people on what we've been up to the past year (or two).
2007
2007 began with Jamie's swearing in for her fourth four year term as Harrison County Treasurer. As usual, Grayson held the Bible, and I held the twins. Easter was, as always, a good time to get the boys to dress up and take a nice picture, missing teeth and all. In April, we took the boys and Jamie's parents (in one car!) to Houston for a short spring break trip, where we saw NASA and went to Kemah Boardwalk. Also going on in the spring was baseball and Cub Scouts for Grayson. In baseball his team celebrated the end of the season with a trip to a minor league game in Shreveport where they got to go on the field with the real players. In Scouts he built a Herbie car for Pinewood Derby and we went to Dad and Lad camp at Camp Pirtle, and had a great time "stamping through the woods". Collin and Parker also had Western Days at their school, where they got to wear cowboys boots and hats for the first time. A particularly proud moment for dad was when Collin and Parker chose to have a Star Trek themed fifth birthday party!
Summer meant Grayson's first year at Camp Fern, which he absolutely loved. The Smiths and the Nolands also took a trip to Alaska, with several days driving and several more on a cruise down the Inside Passage to Vancouver. Highlights here were a helicopter ride to walk on a glacier, a train ride up a mountain, and goofing around for the photographer on the ship.
Fall meant back to school for the boys - still at pre-K for the twins but third grade for Grayson. All three boys played baseball - for the twins it was their first time at tee-ball. Jamie and Michael had a nice trip to Memphis where Michael was speaking at a seminar, and got a chance to see Elvis' home Graceland and the ducks at the Peabody Hotel, both of which they enjoyed very much.
Fall around our house also means cheering on the Cowboys, and all three boys got into it this year. Grayson had a special treat when we took him to see the Cowboys play the Jets on Thanksgiving Day. We stayed at the players' hotel and got his ball signed by several players - our favorite was #57 Kevin Burnett because he talked to Grayson - called him a "little man." We always cheer for Kevin now. November meant a anniversary trip for Michael and Jamie, who celebrated their 11th anniversary with a short stay at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.
Christmas 2007 was marked by the boys getting their first dogs, a pair one six week old Golden Retrievers named Belle and Snowflake. We also went on the Polar Express train out of Palestine, Texas.
2008
2008 started with a big change, as Michael left the law firm he'd been at for fifteen years and opened a new Marshall office for his new firm Siebman, Reynolds, Burg, Phillips & Smith, LLP. (Grayson likes the kids' play room at the new office). He was also named to the Texas "SuperLawyers" list in Texas Monthly with one of his new partners, and wrote a story on his experience opening a new office which was the cover story in the July issue of the Texas Bar Journal.
A highlight of the winter of 2008 was a heavy snowfall in March, which let the boys and the dogs get out and play in the white stuff. The 2008 spring break trip was to Florida with Mimi and Papa to watch the night-time launch of the space shuttle Endeavour on STS-123. Michael didn't ride along on the trip, but did fly down to Orlando, and spent the night at Kennedy Space Center for the launch. Jamie and the boys stayed several more days and went to Universal Studios before driving home. In other spring news, Grayson won second place in his pack's Bear den for his pinewood derby car.
Jamie and Michael celebrated the beginning of summer with a short trip to Mackinac Island in Michigan with friends Kelly and Brad Morin, and really enjoyed their stay at the Grand Hotel. Summer was busy again, with Grayson spending his second summer camping at Camp Fern. He also went with Michael and Jamie to Michael's last meeting of the State Bar Board of Directors in Houston in June, where Michael received the Outstanding Third Year Director award and a Presidential Citation for his work while on the bar board. More importantly, we went to see the Astros play the Red Sox at Minute Maid Park across the park from our hotel.
Fall was marked by all three boys starting school at the same campus for the first time. Grayson also started football, playing for the Broncos, and really enjoyed it, especially their last game which was played at Maverick Stadium.
Michael and Jamie celebrated their twelfth wedding anniversary with a three week transatlantic cruise starting in Venice, with stops at various ports in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Azores on the way back to the U.S. A highlight was being able to catch cousin Paul Kolker in Rome, where he is studying at a seminary near St. Peter's Basilica.
The highlight of the fall, however, was another trip with the boys and Jim & Marie - this time to Disney World in Florida, where we spent seven days touring the parks from December 12-19. We returned just in time for Christmas, which we spent at our home, hosting all the family events this year. Now you can see why we're late getting Christmas cards out!.
