The Ruins - Scott Smith

Well this was just about the most depressing book I've ever read.  Lots of character development and detail, but absolutely depressing, and the anticipated action never happened.  I say "action" because based on the title of the book you'd assume the characters encounter ruins at some point, but they never do.  That really annoyed me, because I expected that at some point the story would resolve into some ancient horror lurking in Mayan ruins, a la Lovecraft.  Maybe because that's what the book's cover said.  Well, no such luck - no ruins ever appear, and the villain is never explained.  Well written book, but a disappointment as a read.
