Last Sunday I took the afternoon off to go see Much Ado About Nothing put on at the Texas Shakespeare Festival in Kilgore, Texas. I got interested in watching a play after reading Book of Air & Shadows and knew the play from the Kenneth Branagh movie several years back. I'd been to see The Tempest at TSF in 1993 and really enjoyed it - just had never had a chance to get back to it.
Very good production - the comedic roles were the most enjoyable (I won't say the best) - Benedick and the watrchman were both hysterical, as was the staging of their scenes. Didn't really care for Beatrice as played, but much of her lines are just completely incomprehensible, as opposed to Benedick's, probably because the metaphors and jokes just haven't aged as well. As a result, she just isn't as funny, while he continues to be (and the best parts of the plays were the unspoken parts, especially from Benedick - the little reactions that audiences can understand, even when we can't follow the text).
Thoroughly enjoyed the production - and wish I could have gotten over for Othello and Amadeus, but there's just no time.
