Today's highight (as of 4 pm, anyway) has been building Grayson's "suitcase" from a plan he drew up last weekend. Kind of an interesting story.
About a month ago I ordered a Levenger "editor's desk" for the workshop to have a place on the workbench in the workshop to hold books and photos while working on a model ship. The idea was to be able to open up books with detail photos of the ship I'm working on at an angle so I can study them side by side to the ship while I'm building it - such as when working on the May 1942 USS Lexington (CV-2) (shown) which is looking to be the first model I'll actually complete since 1993.
Grayson came in last weekend while I was setting it up and started talking about building him a box (he's forever coming up with things he wants to build - fortunately he no longer expects me to assemble Chitty Chitty Bang Bang out of the junk cars behind Jim's old house) so I cleared the desk, gave him a a pen and some paper (he asked for the straight edge - seriously), and he came up with a drawing of what he wanted (the pattern on the front is some sort of design he wants to paint on it). Today I had him draw up a parts list (shown next to the plans) for what we needed to complete the wooden briefcase, and we ran down down to Lowes and got the parts. Took about an hour of work with a circular saw on some scrap plywood and 1x2s and some time with the drill, hammer and screwdrivers to put together his first briefcase, complete with latch and lock (which he picked because it looks like Batman). Ten minutes later he had Jamie write his name on it, "Made in Texas" and taped one of her campaign cards to it. Right now he's upstairs figuring out what to put in it and planning the arrangement of the interior compartments.
I know it's trite to say this, but at times like this being a dad is just the best job in the world.
