At long last I am about to get a post up about our trip to Europe last month. An edited section of the photos is in the photo albums section to the right, with only selections in this post, so be sure to check there for everything good. November 8
The day after Jamie's election win, we flew to Europe, leaving Shreveport bright and early on the 11:30 flight to Atlanta, and then to Rome. We thoroughly enjoyed the elections news in the various airports.
November 9 - Rome
We arrived in Rome on Thursday morning , and checked in at our hotel, the Regina Baglione on Via Veneto (across from the U.S. embassy). As they were not yet ready for us, we left our bags and walked down to Piazza Barberini, and from there to Santa Maria della Vittoria, where we saw Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Theresa. Beautiful church, but the sculpture looks better in photos. Not its fault - the light just doesn't do it justice. On the way back we went through the thoroughly creepy Capuchin Crypt, and then took a short nap at the hotel (we couldn't help it - we were jet lagged real bad). For "lunch/dinner" we went to Cafe Peperone, then walked up Sistina to the Spanish Steps. We shopped for a few hours and I bought a tie, then we picked up a gelato at Blue Ice on the way back to the hotel.
November 10 - Civitavecchia
The next morning, after breakfast in the hotel we too the shuttle to the Golden Princess at Civitavecchia. We had lunch at the pizza place, then booked our shore excursions. We went to the spa and booked some things, then had life boat drill and yet another nap (well, I did, while Jamie got a massage). We had dinner and went to see the show.
November 11 - Naples (Amalfi Coast)
Saturday morning our ship came into Naples and we had signed up fro a bus tour of the Amalfi coast. We stopped at Sorrento and went down to the square where we’d had lunch during our visit in 1998, then had lunch at Il Saraceno further down the coast. In Amalfi itself I bought a book that showed views of ancient Rome since it had good information on the tomb of St. Peter, which we’d be seeing in a couple of weeks.. On the way back we stopped at Ercolano and toured the Donadio cameo factory. When we got back to the ship we had our teeth whitened, then went to dinner and to bed.
